What made you want to become a spin instructor? Why do you love it so much?
I started at the front desk at Equinox in July of 2012 with the dream of being a fitness instructor. I studied and got a few certifications and actually got my start doing Zumba in early 2013. I was then asked to branch out and create other dance cardio classes. I then went in to body conditioning and then HIIT. I added cycling after being approached by several of my students and fellow instructors who thought it would be a good fit. When I started the training program at Flywheel I knew very little about cycling. I had taken a one day cycling certification with an amazing instructor but it was no where near the amount of knowledge I would need to start teaching. I was a complete mess. The master instructors at Flywheel were very helpful and took their time with me. I feel very fortunate to be able to do what I do and I like all the formats I teach for different reasons.
How often do you work out? Weights or cardio?
Since the classes I teach are cardio based, I have to force myself to do weight training at least 3 times a week or I become seriously thin. People don’t realize that you burn fat AND muscle when doing cardiovascular exercises. I usually teach 15-20 classes per week. Zumba and dance cardio classes are actually the most physically taxing classes to teach. If I stop dancing the whole class stops dancing. I make sure that I reserve Monday to do absolutely nothing.
The best gym cardio song of yours?
Impossible question to answer. There are too many great songs out right now. You can follow may favorite tunes on Soundcloud: MatthewJohnsonHarris
What is you favorite muscle group to work out?
Ass and Abs will always be my favorite day at the gym. I put on the most twerkalicious songs on my playlist and get to it. If you don’t know, it is all about the ass these days. Ass is the new abs.
How do you refrain from getting bored?
If you are the strongest person in the room, it is time to mix it up. As soon as I feel as though I have a handle on an exercise, I purposely take class that pushes my boundaries and makes me uncomfortable. It is easy to fall in love with certain exercises and instructors. There is comfort in the familiar. If you are taking the same classes every week you will hit a wall. Mix it up!
If you have a cheat day, what does it consist of?
Fried anything. Fried Chicken. Fried Fish. Fried Shrimp. Well…. you get the idea.
